When I took this trip, the sole was about 3:1 to the dollar.

And yes, I bought the guy that spotted me a drink later that night.

My backpack was chained up, but fairly unmolested the whole time. Thieves don't often work as well in places where there's no obvious escape route. Grabbing your camera in a crowded market and running until the city's end is one thing. Here there was just a single room to hide in and lots of eyes on everyone all the time.

That said, the American that was traveling with me had his valuable swiss army knife taken, and my toothbrush went missing. I can't 100% attribute the latter to theft, as it seems like a fairly pointless thing to steal.

The part about the pigs doing the nasty - literally, even though you didn't describe how it looked, was somehow too descriptive for comfort. I'm glad someone forked over the two soles for you so you didn't get stabbed on the dock or something!

JED - each sole is about a third of a dollar, so whoever paid for him spent about 60 cents.

GREAT photos! Sounds like you might kill at this point for a meal at Bob's Big Boy and a shared cucumber! (ah, road trips!)
Sounds like your trip is pretty amazing. The sex crazed pigs put me over the top though!

Sounds like they served paste for breakfast.

Poor monkey, poor turtle... and I would also say poor pigs, but it sounds like they had the best time out of everyone.

Can you catch malaria from stray vomit?

Looking forward to reading about your Amazon experience:)

I heard that last night was a trip from hell, and you described it perfectly. How the other side "lives" - man. How much is a sole again? What about paying that person back - was it another gringo who paid your way. How did you protect your backpack in that hell hole? I am so glad you missed Malaria again! What a trip! Great read. L/M

Love the snapshot of "the tremendously overloaded ship" -- great capture (and a fun read). Ah, boat travel.
